Is there a way to make safe, effective guinea pig bedding at home?
I'm BROKE! And it's time to change my animal's bedding. But I'm out of stuff from the store... is there any way to make something that is safe and clean from stuff that would be just laying around the house?

This may not be laying around the house, but here is a cheap way to line your guinea pig's cage without sacrificing their health. This works best if you have a large cage and are willing to spend some time each day maintaining the cage. There are some initial costs, but after that there is no recurring cost except perhaps a slightly higher water bill.
You will need:
1. a piece of fleece cut to the size of the cage, plus a few inches on each end. You can get this from a fabric store for pretty cheap, and they will even cut it to size for you.
2. An absorbent fabric like old towels, or mattress pads made for a baby's crib. You likely have some old towels laying around, but if not you can purchase crib pads for pretty cheap.
3. A hand vacuum or shop vac.
If the fleece is new, you need to wash it 3 times in hot water without detergent. This is only necessary when it is new, to break down the fabric enough so that it no longer repels water.
Lay the towels or other absorbent material down, completely covering the bottom of the cage. Then lay the fleece on top, and tuck the extra material under the absorbent layer.
When the guinea pigs pee, the fleece will wick away the moisture to the absorbent layer underneath. Use the hand vac or shop vac daily to pick up and dispose of the poop.
Once a week, run the fleece and towels/mattress pad through the wash. You will want to do this with hot water (some washing machines have a "sanitary" cycle that's perfect for this). Do not use fabric softener, as this will make the fabric more repellent, which you do not want. You may, however, want to add some white vinegar into the wash. This will help neutralize any smells.
I do this with my guinea pigs, because I have three very large cages, and it would cost a fortune to use wood chips or other commercial bedding.
