How to treat bed sores of a patient who has bone cancer of the spine?
my aunt has been bed ridden for 4 months now because of bone cancer in the spine an ribs. She has a bed soar at her upper buttocks. The 2-3 hours side to side movement is no longer applicable to her because it hurts her badly. it is always moist because its covered by her diaper. I would like to ask how we can treat it. What kind of dressing or maybe topical ointment we can use to trea it? It is a very deep sore and already has pus. It looks like a burn. Help! need answers ASAP. thanks.
Well, prevention of bedsores is always preferable.
#1--make sure she doesn't get any more bedsores. She must be turned frequently even though this is painful for her. Is her pain being well controlled? Ask an adult to talk to her doctor about additional pain medicine. She should have adequate access to enough medicaiton that she is as comfortable as possible. She also may need a special mattress and special things to lie on that will help prevent additional sores from developing.
#2 How long does the doctor think that your aunt will live? If less than 6 months, you may be elegible for hospice care where a nurse comes to the house.
#3 Regardless, you need help. You should be able to get a home health nurse at the house to take care of that decubitus. It sounds like it's infected. Please talk to your aunts doctor.
There is a new device being used that might be helpful in healing this wound, and the insurance would pay for it if ordered by a doctor. It's called "negative pressure wound therapy". Browse it on yahoo.
